PowerShell Script Block Logging

A Windows feature that records the content of PowerShell script blocks as they execute, including deobfuscated code.

Definition

Enabled via Group Policy, script block logging writes Event ID 4104 to the Microsoft-Windows-PowerShell/Operational log. Because it records code after deobfuscation, it is critical for detecting fileless attacks. Module logging (4103) and transcription provide additional coverage.

Example

Event 4104 revealing the decoded payload of a Base64-encoded PowerShell download cradle.

Exam tip

Event ID 4104 = script block logging; key for detecting obfuscated PowerShell.
