Obfuscation

Making data or code difficult to understand without changing its function, to hinder analysis.

Definition

Obfuscation techniques include renaming identifiers, encoding strings, inserting junk code, and masking data. It raises the effort required for reverse engineering but does not provide strong cryptographic protection. Security+ groups it with masking, tokenization, and steganography.

Example

A mobile app uses ProGuard to obfuscate class and method names before release.

Exam tip

Obfuscation is not encryption; it only slows an attacker down.
