Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)

A Layer 2 protocol for direct links that provides framing, authentication (PAP or CHAP) and network-layer negotiation.

Definition

PPP uses Link Control Protocol to establish links and Network Control Protocols such as IPCP to configure Layer 3. CHAP is preferred over PAP because it does not send passwords in clear text.

Example

A serial WAN link between two routers uses PPP with CHAP.

Exam tip

CHAP over PAP: CHAP uses challenge-response hashes.
