Leased Line

A dedicated, private telecommunications circuit between two locations, rented from a carrier with guaranteed bandwidth.

Definition

Leased lines provide consistent performance and an SLA but cost more than shared broadband. Traditional examples are T1/E1 and T3/E3; modern equivalents are dedicated Ethernet services.

Example

A bank connects its data center and headquarters with a dedicated 10 Gbps leased line.

Exam tip

Leased line = dedicated, predictable, expensive.
