Platform as a Service (PaaS)

Cloud service model where the provider manages infrastructure and runtime; the customer deploys and manages applications and data.

Definition

PaaS supplies a managed platform, including operating systems, runtimes, middleware and often databases, on which customers deploy code without managing servers. The customer controls the application, its configuration and data, while the provider handles OS patching, scaling infrastructure and platform availability.

Example

Deploying a Python web app to Azure App Service or Google App Engine without managing any VMs is PaaS.

Exam tip

PaaS questions often hinge on who patches the OS (the provider) versus who secures application code and data (the customer).
