Google App Engine (GAE)

Google Cloud's fully managed PaaS for web apps, offered in standard (sandboxed, scale to zero) and flexible (container-based) environments.

Definition

App Engine standard runs supported runtimes in sandboxes with rapid scaling and scale to zero, while the flexible environment runs containers on Compute Engine VMs. Features include versions, traffic splitting and automatic, basic or manual scaling. Each project can have one App Engine application, whose region cannot be changed.

Example

A team deploys a new version and splits 10 percent of traffic to it before full rollout.

Exam tip

Google now often positions Cloud Run for new container workloads, but App Engine remains in exam scenarios for simple PaaS web apps.
