PIM Dense Mode (PIM-DM)

A push-model multicast protocol that floods traffic everywhere and prunes branches without receivers.

Definition

PIM-DM suits networks with receivers on most subnets but wastes bandwidth elsewhere, and periodic reflooding occurs every 3 minutes when prunes expire. State refresh messages can reduce re-flooding. It is rarely used today.

Example

ip pim dense-mode

Exam tip

Dense mode = flood and prune (push); sparse mode = explicit join (pull).
