Permission Inheritance

The default behavior where files and subfolders receive permissions from their parent folder.

Definition

In NTFS, inheritance propagates permissions down the folder tree unless disabled. Copying a file to a new folder gives it the destination's permissions, while moving it within the same volume keeps original permissions. Explicit Deny overrides inherited Allow.

Example

Disable inheritance on a Payroll subfolder to restrict it to HR only.

Exam tip

Copy = inherit destination; move on same volume = keep permissions.
