Parkerian Hexad

Donn Parker's six-element security model: confidentiality, possession, integrity, authenticity, availability, and utility.

Definition

The Parkerian Hexad extends the CIA triad with possession (control), authenticity, and utility. Possession covers loss of control without disclosure, and utility covers data that is available but no longer usable, such as data encrypted with a lost key. It is an alternative model sometimes referenced in advanced security curricula.

Example

Losing the only key to an encrypted backup leaves the data available but with no utility.

Exam tip

Know the three additions beyond CIA: possession/control, authenticity, and utility.
