Availability

Security goal ensuring authorized users have timely, reliable access to data and systems when needed.

Definition

Availability protects against disruption of service caused by attacks, failures, or disasters. It is supported by redundancy, fault tolerance, backups, capacity planning, patching, and DDoS mitigation. Loss of availability is called destruction or denial.

Example

Clustering two web servers behind a load balancer keeps a site available if one server fails.

Exam tip

Questions about RAID, load balancing, UPS, or DDoS protection usually point to availability.
