OSPFv3

The version of OSPF for IPv6 (and, with address families, IPv4) defined in RFC 5340.

Definition

OSPFv3 runs per link rather than per subnet, uses link-local addresses for neighbor communication and multicasts to FF02::5 and FF02::6. It relies on IPsec for authentication (or the authentication trailer in newer releases) and introduces new LSA types: Link LSA (Type 8) and Intra-Area-Prefix LSA (Type 9). Router IDs remain 32-bit and must be configured if no IPv4 address exists.

Example

ipv6 ospf 1 area 0 on an interface

Exam tip

On an IPv6-only router OSPFv3 will not start without a manually configured 32-bit router ID.
