OSPF Stub Area

An OSPF area that blocks Type 4 and Type 5 external LSAs and receives a default route from the ABR instead.

Definition

Stub areas shrink the LSDB of routers that have only one exit. They cannot contain an ASBR or a virtual link, and all routers in the area must agree on the stub flag carried in hellos. Area 0 cannot be a stub.

Example

area 2 stub on every router in area 2

Exam tip

The stub flag must match on all routers or they will not become neighbors.
