OSPF External Route Type

OSPF E1 and E2 routes: E2 (default) keeps only the redistributed metric, while E1 adds internal cost to reach the ASBR.

Definition

E2 routes have a constant external metric everywhere in the domain; ties are broken by forwarding metric (cost to ASBR). E1 routes add the internal path cost and are preferred over E2 for the same prefix. N1 and N2 are the NSSA equivalents. Cisco's default seed metric is 20 (1 for BGP-learned routes).

Example

redistribute static subnets metric-type 1

Exam tip

OSPF route preference order: intra-area (O), inter-area (O IA), E1/N1, then E2/N2 regardless of cost.
