OAuth Redirect URI Validation

Requiring an exact match between the redirect URI in an OAuth request and the URIs registered for the client.

Definition

Loose matching (wildcards, prefix or substring checks) lets attackers redirect authorization codes or tokens to domains they control, sometimes via open redirects. Current best practice requires exact string matching.

Example

The authorization server rejects https://app.example.com.evil.net/callback because it is not an exact registered match.

Exam tip

Exact matching is the rule; open redirects on the client undermine it.
