OAuth 2.0

An authorization framework that lets applications obtain limited, delegated access tokens to APIs without handling user passwords.

Definition

Roles are resource owner, client, authorization server, and resource server. Grant types include authorization code (with PKCE), client credentials for machine-to-machine, and device code. OpenID Connect adds an identity layer on top.

Example

A script uses the client credentials grant to get an access token for the Webex API.

Exam tip

OAuth 2.0 is authorization, OIDC is authentication; client credentials is the grant for service-to-service automation.
