NTFS

The New Technology File System, the standard journaling filesystem for Windows with permissions, encryption, compression and quotas.

Definition

NTFS supports ACL-based permissions, EFS encryption, compression, disk quotas, alternate data streams and journaling. It is required for the Windows system volume.

Example

convert D: /fs:ntfs converts a FAT32 volume to NTFS without data loss.

Exam tip

Moving a file within the same NTFS volume keeps its permissions; copying or moving to another volume inherits the destination's.
