NISTIR 8259

NIST's foundational guidance on cybersecurity activities and capabilities that IoT device manufacturers should provide.

Definition

NISTIR 8259 and 8259A define a core baseline of device capabilities: device identification, device configuration, data protection, logical access to interfaces, software update and cybersecurity state awareness. NIST SP 800-213 extends this for federal agency use.

Example

A manufacturer designs its thermostat so it can be uniquely identified and securely updated per NISTIR 8259A.

Exam tip

Six baseline capabilities; supports the U.S. Cyber Trust Mark criteria.
