Next-Hop-Self

A BGP neighbor option that rewrites the NEXT_HOP to the router's own address when advertising to iBGP peers.

Definition

Edge routers set next-hop-self toward iBGP peers so internal routers need only reach the edge router's loopback rather than external link subnets. It is also used on DMVPN and route reflectors in specific designs. Junos implements it with a policy action then next-hop self.

Example

neighbor 10.255.0.3 next-hop-self

Exam tip

Route reflectors do not change next hop for reflected routes unless forced.
