NETCONF

The Network Configuration Protocol (RFC 6241), an XML-based RPC protocol over SSH (port 830) for installing, manipulating, and deleting device configuration.

Definition

NETCONF has four layers: content (YANG-modeled data), operations (get, get-config, edit-config, copy-config, delete-config, lock, unlock, commit, close-session, kill-session), messages (rpc, rpc-reply, notification), and secure transport. Sessions begin with a hello exchange of capabilities.

Example

ncclient m.edit_config(target='running', config=xml_payload) changes an interface description.

Exam tip

Port 830 over SSH, XML encoding, hello/capabilities exchange, and candidate datastore with commit are frequently tested.
