Negative Testing

Testing how software behaves with invalid, unexpected or malicious input and conditions.

Definition

Security testing relies heavily on negative tests derived from abuse cases: wrong types, oversized input, missing authentication, wrong roles and out-of-order workflows. Verifying that the system fails securely is as important as verifying happy paths.

Example

A test confirms that a request with another user's token returns 403 rather than data.

Exam tip

Abuse cases become negative test cases.
