Music on Hold (MOH)

A media resource that streams audio to callers placed on hold, sourced from audio files or a fixed live input.

Definition

CUCM's IP Voice Media Streaming Application provides MOH using unicast or multicast streams; multicast saves bandwidth when many callers at a site are on hold. User hold and network hold (transfer, park, conference) can use different audio sources set on the line or device. Branch routers can provide multicast MOH locally in SRST or by relaying multicast from CUCM to save WAN bandwidth.

Example

Multicast MOH from 239.1.1.1 is delivered to branch callers by the branch router so hold audio does not cross the WAN.

Exam tip

Multicast MOH requires multicast routing (or local router MOH) and correct max hops/TTL settings.
