Mean

The arithmetic average: the sum of values divided by the number of values.

Definition

The mean uses every value, which makes it efficient for symmetric data but sensitive to outliers and skew. Trimmed means drop extreme values to improve robustness.

Example

(2 + 4 + 9) / 3 = 5

Exam tip

One extreme value can move the mean a lot; the median resists it.
