Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) exam guide

Exam CAP-Essentials, CAP-Pro, CAP-Expert

The Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) program from INFORMS validates end-to-end analytics practice, from framing the business problem through model deployment and lifecycle management. It now has three levels (CAP-Essentials, CAP-Pro, CAP-Expert) and is one of few vendor-neutral analytics credentials that tests process and judgment rather than a single tool.

Build my study plan

  1. Week 1: Read the INFORMS CAP candidate handbook and the seven-domain job task analysis; take the free sample test to baseline.
  2. Weeks 2-3: Study business and analytics problem framing; these judgment-heavy domains trip up technical candidates.
  3. Weeks 4-5: Review statistics, regression, classification, optimization and simulation concepts at a conceptual level.
  4. Week 6: Cover deployment and lifecycle management (monitoring, drift, model governance).
  5. Week 7: Two full timed practice tests; review every miss against the domain outline.

Make it yours: pick your exam date and weekly hours. We'll split your time by domain weight and give you a printable plan.

Exam-day tips

  • Expect scenario questions about stakeholders and problem framing, not formulas or code.
  • When two answers are technically valid, pick the one that ties back to the business objective.
  • Know when optimization or simulation beats a predictive model; prescriptive methods are tested.
  • Plan a 4-5 hour block for check-in and setup even though the exam is 3 hours.
  • Choose the level carefully: CAP-Pro has no eligibility review, CAP-Expert requires an application.
