Managed Instance Group (MIG)

Google Cloud group of identical VMs created from an instance template with autoscaling, autohealing and rolling updates.

Definition

MIGs can be zonal or regional (spread across zones for higher availability), autoscale on CPU, load balancing capacity, metrics or schedules, recreate unhealthy VMs using health checks, and roll out new templates with canary or rolling updates. Unmanaged instance groups lack these features.

Example

A regional MIG behind a global Application Load Balancer autoscales web servers across three zones.

Exam tip

Autohealing and autoscaling require a managed (not unmanaged) instance group; regional MIGs survive zone failures.
