Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling

AWS service that automatically adjusts the number of EC2 instances in an Auto Scaling group to maintain availability and match demand.

Definition

An Auto Scaling group defines minimum, maximum and desired capacity, a launch template and subnets across AZs. It replaces unhealthy instances, rebalances across AZs and scales using target tracking, step, scheduled or predictive policies, often registering instances with a load balancer target group.

Example

An Auto Scaling group with min 2, max 10 uses target tracking to hold average CPU near 50 percent.

Exam tip

Auto Scaling improves both availability (self-healing, minimum capacity) and cost (scale in when idle).
