Malware Removal Process

CompTIA's seven-step procedure for removing malware from a system.

Definition

The steps are: (1) investigate and verify malware symptoms, (2) quarantine the infected system, (3) disable System Restore in Windows, (4) remediate by updating antimalware and scanning/removal (using Safe Mode or preinstallation environment as needed), (5) schedule scans and run updates, (6) enable System Restore and create a restore point, and (7) educate the end user. Disabling System Restore prevents reinfection from infected restore points.

Example

Disconnect the infected PC from the network, disable System Restore, then run an offline scan.

Exam tip

Know the order; quarantine comes before remediation, and user education is last.
