Loose Coupling

Design principle where components interact through well-defined interfaces or queues so failure or change in one does not break others.

Definition

Loosely coupled architectures use message queues, event buses, load balancers and APIs so components can scale, fail and deploy independently. It improves resilience and scalability and is a core reliability best practice in the well-architected frameworks.

Example

A front end writes jobs to SQS instead of calling the processing service directly, so processing outages do not drop orders.

Exam tip

Introducing a queue (SQS, Service Bus, Pub/Sub) between tiers is the classic answer to decouple components.
