Logic Bomb

Malicious code that lies dormant until a specific condition, such as a date or event, triggers its payload.

Definition

Logic bombs are typically planted by insiders who have access to code or systems. The trigger might be a date, the removal of the author's account from payroll, or a specific user action. Code review, change management and separation of duties help prevent them.

Example

A script that deletes the finance database if the programmer's account is ever disabled.

Exam tip

A trigger condition plus insider placement is the signature of a logic bomb.
