Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)

A protocol for querying and modifying directory services such as Active Directory, using TCP/UDP port 389.

Definition

LDAP organizes objects in a hierarchical tree identified by distinguished names. Applications use it to look up users and groups and to authenticate. Plain LDAP binds can expose credentials, so LDAPS or StartTLS should be used.

Example

An application searches for users in OU=Staff,DC=example,DC=com over LDAP.

Exam tip

LDAP = 389; LDAPS = 636; Global Catalog = 3268/3269.
