Transport Layer Security (TLS)

The cryptographic protocol that secures application traffic with encryption, integrity and certificate-based authentication; successor to SSL.

Definition

TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 are the current versions, and TLS 1.0, 1.1 and all SSL versions are deprecated. TLS secures HTTPS, SMTPS, IMAPS, LDAPS, FTPS and many VPNs. TLS 1.3 shortens the handshake and removes legacy ciphers.

Example

A web server is configured to allow only TLS 1.2 and 1.3.

Exam tip

SSL is obsolete; when a question says SSL, the secure modern answer is TLS 1.2 or 1.3.
