Layer 3 Roaming

A roam between APs in different IP subnets in which the client keeps its original IP address.

Definition

When a client roams to an AP on a controller with a different client VLAN, the original (anchor) controller keeps the client's point of presence and traffic is tunneled from the foreign controller. This preserves sessions. Alternatively, cloud designs extend the same VLAN everywhere.

Exam tip

Layer 3 roaming uses anchor and foreign controllers to preserve the client IP.
