Known-Good Component

A part confirmed to work that is swapped in to isolate whether the original component is faulty.

Definition

Swapping a suspected failed part with a known-good one (RAM, PSU, cable, monitor) tests a theory quickly. If the problem disappears, the original part is faulty. Technicians keep known-good spares for this purpose.

Example

Replacing a suspect power cable with a known-good one restores power to a monitor.

Exam tip

Swap with known-good parts to test a theory; do not swap multiple parts at once.
