Key Goal Indicator (KGI)

Metric that shows whether a business or IT goal has been achieved.

Definition

KGIs are lagging measures of outcome, such as reduction in reportable incidents or achievement of certification. KPIs measure process performance that drives toward goals; KGIs measure the result. The terms appear in COBIT and ISACA material.

Example

Achieving ISO/IEC 27001 certification by year-end is tracked as a KGI.

Exam tip

KGI = after the fact, goal achieved; KPI = how well the process performs.
