IPv6 Link-Local Address (LLA)

An IPv6 address in fe80::/10, automatically configured on every IPv6 interface and valid only on the local link.

Definition

Link-local addresses are mandatory and are used for Neighbor Discovery, router advertisements and as the next-hop address for routing protocols. Routers never forward packets with a link-local source or destination. Because the same fe80 prefix exists on every link, link-local addresses need a zone or interface identifier when used, such as fe80::1%eth0.

Example

A host's default gateway in IPv6 is often the router's link-local address, such as fe80::1.

Exam tip

fe80 addresses are normal in IPv6, unlike 169.254 addresses in IPv4, which signal a problem.
