IPv6 Address Notation

IPv6 addresses are written as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits separated by colons, with a /prefix length.

Definition

Each group, called a hextet, represents 16 bits. Hexadecimal digits are 0-9 and a-f and are case-insensitive, though RFC 5952 recommends lowercase. The prefix length after the slash identifies the network portion, typically /64 for a LAN.

Example

2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:ff00:0042:8329 is a full-length IPv6 address.

Exam tip

Any character beyond f, such as g, makes an IPv6 address invalid.
