Infrared Control (IR)

Controlling AV devices by sending modulated infrared light commands, either from a remote or from wired IR emitters.

Definition

IR commands are usually modulated on a carrier around 38 kHz and require line of sight to the device's IR receiver; control systems use stick-on emitters placed over the receiver. IR is one-way, so the control system cannot confirm device state. Discrete codes (separate power on and power off) are preferred over toggle codes.

Example

An IR emitter on a cable box's receiver window lets the control system change channels.

Exam tip

IR is one-way with no feedback; choose RS-232 or IP control for reliable state tracking.
