Image Classification

A computer vision task that assigns a label to an entire image.

Definition

Image classifiers output one or more class labels for the whole image, typically using CNNs or vision transformers fine-tuned from pretrained backbones. It differs from detection, which locates objects, and segmentation, which labels pixels.

Example

Labeling a photo as cat, dog or bird.

Exam tip

Classification = what; detection = what and where (boxes); segmentation = which pixels.
