IEEE 802.11r

Fast BSS Transition amendment that allows key negotiation during or before reassociation for fast roaming.

Definition

802.11r (FT) reduces roaming delay by deriving keys from a hierarchy (PMK-R0, PMK-R1) shared among APs in a mobility domain. Clients can complete the FT exchange over the air or over the distribution system. It is important for voice and real-time applications using 802.1X.

Exam tip

802.11r speeds roaming; some legacy clients fail to associate to FT-only SSIDs, which is why adaptive or mixed modes exist.
