Fast BSS Transition (FT)

802.11r method that pre-derives keys from a key hierarchy so clients can roam without a full 802.1X or 4-way exchange.

Definition

FT uses PMK-R0 and PMK-R1 keys distributed within a mobility domain identified by an MDID. The client and new AP complete key derivation within authentication and reassociation frames over the air or over the DS. Roam times drop to tens of milliseconds, supporting voice.

Exam tip

FT over-the-air sends to the target AP; over-the-DS goes through the current AP.
