IEEE 802.11ax

Amendment (Wi-Fi 6/6E) focused on efficiency in dense environments with OFDMA, UL/DL MU-MIMO, 1024-QAM, and TWT.

Definition

802.11ax defines the High Efficiency (HE) PHY for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz, with a theoretical maximum of about 9.6 Gbps. Key features include OFDMA, uplink and downlink MU-MIMO, 1024-QAM, 4x longer OFDM symbols, BSS coloring, spatial reuse, and Target Wake Time. Wi-Fi 6 certification began in 2019 and IEEE ratified it in 2021.

Exam tip

802.11ax's main goal is efficiency and per-user throughput in dense deployments, not just peak speed.
