H.323 Gatekeeper

An optional H.323 component that performs address resolution, admission control, bandwidth management and zone management.

Definition

A gatekeeper registers H.323 endpoints within its zone, translates E.164 aliases or H.323 IDs to IP addresses and admits or rejects calls based on bandwidth. Multiple gatekeepers can exchange location requests (LRQ) to route between zones. Cisco Expressway and older Cisco IOS gatekeepers provide this function for legacy video and voice networks.

Example

An H.323 endpoint registered to Expressway-C dials 5001, and the gatekeeper function resolves it to a registered room system.

Exam tip

Gatekeepers are optional in H.323, but when present every call needs admission via RAS.
