Group Scope

The AD property (domain local, global or universal) that determines where a group can be used and what members it can contain.

Definition

Global groups contain accounts from their own domain and can be used anywhere in the forest; domain local groups can contain members from any trusted domain but are used only in their own domain; universal groups can contain members from any domain in the forest and are stored in the global catalog.

Example

A global Accounting group is nested into a domain local group that has share permissions.

Exam tip

Universal group memberships replicate to every GC, so avoid frequent changes in large forests.
