Group Policy Processing Order

The sequence in which GPOs apply: local, site, domain, then OU (LSDOU), with later policies overriding earlier ones.

Definition

Settings from GPOs closer to the object win. Block Inheritance on an OU stops higher-level GPOs, while Enforced (formerly No Override) on a link overrides Block Inheritance. Security filtering and WMI filters further limit which objects a GPO applies to.

Example

A domain-level GPO marked Enforced still applies to an OU set to Block Inheritance.

Exam tip

Remember LSDOU, last writer wins, and Enforced beats Block Inheritance.
