Graph Database

A database that stores data as nodes and edges with properties, optimized for traversing relationships.

Definition

Graph databases make multi-hop queries such as friends-of-friends, fraud rings and recommendations efficient where relational joins would be expensive. Examples include Neo4j, Amazon Neptune and the Cosmos DB for Apache Gremlin API. Query languages include Cypher, Gremlin, SPARQL and the ISO GQL standard.

Example

MATCH (a:Person)-[:KNOWS]->(b)-[:KNOWS]->(c) RETURN c

Exam tip

Highly connected data with many-hop relationship queries points to a graph database.
