git cherry-pick

A Git command that applies the changes from a specific existing commit onto the current branch as a new commit.

Definition

Cherry-picking is useful for backporting fixes to release branches without merging an entire branch. It creates a new commit with a different hash.

Example

git switch release/2.1 && git cherry-pick 4f2a9c1

Exam tip

Use cherry-pick to copy individual commits; merge brings in whole branch histories.
