Geofencing

Using a device's geographic location to create virtual boundaries that trigger security policies.

Definition

Geofencing allows or blocks access or actions based on whether a device is inside a defined area, using GPS, Wi-Fi, or IP geolocation. MDM can disable cameras inside secure facilities, and identity platforms can block sign-ins from certain countries. Location data can be spoofed, so it should be one signal among many.

Example

Corporate phones automatically disable their cameras when entering the research lab building.

Exam tip

Geolocation identifies where; geofencing enforces policy based on location.
