G.722

An ITU-T wideband voice codec at 64 kbps that captures audio from 50 to 7000 Hz for HD voice.

Definition

G.722 uses sub-band ADPCM at a 16 kHz sampling rate to deliver noticeably clearer speech than narrowband codecs with the same 64 kbps bit rate as G.711. Many Cisco IP phones and video endpoints prefer G.722 for on-net calls. For historical reasons its RTP clock rate is signaled as 8000 in SDP even though it samples at 16 kHz.

Example

Two Cisco 8800 series phones on the LAN negotiate G.722 for HD audio.

Exam tip

G.722 is wideband at the same bandwidth as G.711; do not confuse it with the 8 kbps G.729.
