Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS)

Transmitting on one narrow frequency at a time while hopping in a pseudorandom sequence.

Definition

FHSS was used in the original 1997 802.11 standard at 1 and 2 Mbps. Bluetooth Classic uses FHSS with 79 1-MHz channels and 1,600 hops per second. Hopping provides resistance to narrowband interference.

Example

Bluetooth hops among 79 channels in the 2.4 GHz band.

Exam tip

Bluetooth's FHSS can interfere with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; adaptive frequency hopping reduces this.
