format Command

A Windows command that creates a new file system on a volume, erasing its contents.

Definition

format E: /fs:ntfs /q performs a quick format, which rebuilds file system structures without overwriting data, while a full format also scans for bad sectors and, since Windows Vista, writes zeros. Formatting is not secure data sanitization on SSDs.

Example

format E: /fs:exfat /q prepares a flash drive for use on Windows and macOS.

Exam tip

A quick format leaves data recoverable; use secure erase or wiping tools for sanitization.
