Federal Contract Information (FCI)

Non-public information provided by or generated for the US government under a contract, not intended for public release.

Definition

FCI is protected under FAR 52.204-21, which specifies 15 basic safeguarding requirements. Contractors that handle only FCI need CMMC Level 1. Information provided to the public or simple transactional information such as payment processing is excluded.

Example

A contractor's internal schedule for delivering office supplies to an Army base is FCI.

Exam tip

FCI only requires CMMC Level 1; CUI requires Level 2 or 3.
